Random Ramblings of a Video Games Blogger : Are New Games All The Same?

 Mirror's Edge Screenshot

Being 14, I am still in full time education and when I'm travelling to and from the place I've nicknamed "Beelzebub's Lair", I have a lot of time to ponder random thoughts (much like Russell Brand's Ponderland but with less euphemisms and WAY less hair!). Today, I was sat on the epically slow bus that I catch to school everyday and I was staring out of the window (with a blank look on my face of course!) when I happened to see 3 of the same make of car zoom past. All 3were different colours but it did get me thinking, "are we seeing the same video games all the time but with miniscule variations?". There's a reason that Call of Duty: World At War was such a commercial flop in comparison to its predecessor, it was because developers Treyarch didn't bring anything new to the table. Modern Warfare was innovative and imaginative and that's why it was so successful. The likes of DICE's Mirror's Edge really pushed the boundaries of video game development as a "first-person free-running combat" concept had never been made before. While the game didn't do as well as DICE and publishers EA had hoped it did give many other developers the courage to create original IP's. So, as gamers we can only hope that more of there "out-there" games are produced in the future.

System Fail News: Guitar Hero 5 Set For September Release Date

image

So, how many Guitar Hero games have there been released so far? Everyone pull out a pen and paper; Guitar Hero 1,2 and 3:Legends Of Rock, Aerosmith,World Tour and most recently, Guitar Hero Metallica. Now by my count that makes 6 and so if they released another game it would be no. 7 right. Not so.Activision are indeed releasing a new game that will be called Guitar Hero 5, but I suppose you guessed that from the title of this post… Anyway this new game will feature a whole host of different acts including…

The Rolling Stones
The White Stripes
Kings of Leon
Tom Petty
Bob Dylan
Johnny Cash
Santana
Vampire Weekend
Beastie Boys
Coldplay
Duran Duran
Gorillaz
Jimmy Eat World
Muse
The Raconteurs

…and it will be released on September 1st, the exact same release date of Rock Band: The Beatles, the upcoming game from Activision’s rivals Harmonix. Best of luck to both developers!

Which developer do you think will come out on top? Leave a comment!

Oh No Not Again!

On Thursday I told you about a major mishap at shopping site Amazon that revealed the plot for Mass Effect 2 and it has been made clear that leaks of gameplay and information are quite a common factor in the cut-throat industry of video games. Why do I say this oyu ask? I have the answer to that question as below there is a video of leaked gameplay from upcoming PS3 exclusive Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves.

Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves gameplay video courtesy of Giant Gamer and YouTube

Sorry about the not-so-perfect quality of the video.

Why not pre-order Uncharted 2 from Amazon?

What do you think of the gameplay in the video? Good, bad or just plain ugly? Put your opinion in the comments box below.

Wii See Dead People

No, this post is not in fact about the movie 'The Sixth Sense' and instead it is actually about an upcoming title on the Nintendo Wii. After their great success with Dead Space on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, the developers of the game are set to release a sequel.

Exclusively on Nintendo Wii.

Judging by the video below the game looks set to look like the fight for the last Krispy Kreme at a Weight Watchers meeting.
I.e deliciously gory.

Not heard of the original, Dead Space? Why not buy it from Amazon?

Dead Space or Dead Stupid?Think that the idea of another undead slaying video game is foolish? Say why in the comments box below.

"Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting"

Everyone loves the Grand Theft Auto from Rockstar, however at the moment none of the GTA games are available on any Nintendo consoles. So, when developers Rockstar thought about expanding the increasingly popular franchise, what better way to do it than to create a GTA for the Nintendo DS? With just under a month before the game in question (Grand Theft Auto:Chinatown) is released it's only natural that Rockstar released this trailer. Have a look below.

Why not pre-order GTA:Chinatown Wars from Amazon?

More Mass Effect!

Boy, will you be happy when you read (and watch) this!

During my daily comb through of the usual internet trash, I stumbled upon an unusual sparkly gem regarding the future of sci-fi shoot 'em up Mass Effect. According to a video interview of the project designer and lead designer for the game which can be found on the second disc of the platinum edition of the game, the developers, Bioware are working on indeed planning what we've all hope for.

More Mass Effect DLC!

Yeah, you read right. Bioware have even more Mass Effect DLC lined up for us.
Don't believe me? Peep the video below.

BTW DaBigDragon apologises for the quality of the video.

Why not buy Mass Effect from Amazon?

Thats A Lot A Downloads!

Wowza! I've been reading loads of reports all over the internet about the huge sccess that the Halo Wars Demo is having! According to statistics the demo received well over 2 million downloads on its first day on the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA if you're nasty!)The demo now holds the record for the most downloaded demo from the XBLA after surpassing the earlier record set by Resident Evil 5 which stood at 1.8 million downloads. I for one am flabbergasted (nice word huh?) at the huge popularity the game is having. Though as its a game from the notorious Halo franchise it's not that surprising. Congratulations to the developers Ensemble (who recently went into administration) SFN hopes that Halo War does just as well (if not better) when the full version of the game is released on the 3rd of March 2009

Here's a thought. Wy not pre-order Halo Wars from Amazon?

Strategic War or Zombie Gore? Which one do you prefer? Leave a cmment below to say which one and why.

2010 Splinter Cell

Unfortunately for Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon fans you will have to wait until 2010 for the next installments of the much loved video game series. Splinter Cell:Convicition was pushed back early this year to a much later date and the new Ghoat Recon game is still in development. Both are said to be released sometime around March 2010.
